Colorado – Mountains, Canyons, Sand Dunes, and Endless Adventures

Our drive to Denver went as planned, giving us enough time to catch up with a good friend over dinner before beginning our Colorado adventure. Over the next few days, we were treated to some of the most breathtaking scenery in North America. From the towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains to the dramatic Royal Gorge, the towering dunes of Great Sand Dunes National Park, and the ancient cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado never stopped amazing us.

Although Colorado is a nearly rectangular state spanning about 380 miles from east to west and 280 miles from north to south, its landscapes couldn’t be more diverse. Snow-capped mountains, alpine tundra, deep river canyons, high deserts, and endless scenic vistas make every mile of the journey unforgettable.

July 3, 2026 – From Boulder to the Roof of the Rockies

Our day began with a visit to Eldorado Canyon State Park, where we enjoyed a beautiful hike with spectacular views of the Continental Divide. Afterward, we made a quick stop in Boulder for lunch before continuing toward Rocky Mountain National Park.

Driving through the park was an unforgettable experience. We traveled from lush meadows to alpine tundra and climbed to elevations over 11,000 feet. Crossing the Continental Divide while surrounded by towering mountain peaks was one of the highlights of the trip. The scenic drive continued through several charming mountain towns before we arrived at our hotel, already excited for another day of exploring.

July 4, 2026 – Garden of the Gods and the Royal Gorge

We started Independence Day with a visit to one of Colorado Springs’ most iconic landmarks—Garden of the Gods. The towering red sandstone formations are even more impressive in person. The easy walking trails offered incredible views from every angle, making it one of the most photogenic stops of our journey.

Our original plan was to head straight to Alamosa, but road trips are often at their best when plans change. Along the way, we made an impromptu stop at the Royal Gorge. Standing nearly 950 feet above the Arkansas River, the suspension bridge is both thrilling and breathtaking. We rode the gondola across the canyon and then walked back over the bridge, taking in the incredible views from every direction.

We arrived in Alamosa with plenty of time to relax before the next day’s adventure. Although it was the Fourth of July, Colorado was under Level II fire restrictions because of dry conditions, so fireworks celebrations were canceled. Instead, we enjoyed a peaceful evening under the mountain skies.
